  1. Antihistamines
Sneezing or inflammation on introduction to any foreign bodies is a reaction which we refer to an allergy. This reaction is caused by Histamine, a chemical released when you come in contact with the allergens.

Antihistamines, also known as H1 blockers or H1 antagonists, are a group of agents designed to nullify the results of Histamine secretion and suppress the respiratory allergic reactions.

Mechanism: Antihistamines target the Histamine-1 tissue and compete with histamine for the receptor which affects the cellular responses blocking effects created by histamine.

Common Uses: Antihistamines are commonly used in the cases of rhinitis, allergic sinusitis, uncomplicated urticaria, and angioedema.

  1. Antitussives
Probably one of the most common medications to resist a cough and flu consists of antitussives. In cases of an uncontrollable cough at night, antitussive medications can be your pick for relief as many antitussives are available without a prescription.

Mechanism: Antitussives suppress cough of various respiratory conditions by targeting Medulla Oblongata repressing the cough reflex.

Common Uses: The most common use of antitussives is to provide relief from a cough. There are two kinds of antitussives- Narcotic and Non-narcotic. A typical cough narcotic antitussive medications are codeine, hydrocodone, and benzonatate. While the non-narcotics are dextromethorphan and butamirate citrate.

  1. Bronchodilators
Bronchodilators are the agents that facilitate breathing activity by soothing the muscle tissue and opening the airways of the lungs preventing the blockage in severe breathing issues such as asthma and bronchospasm. There are four types of Bronchodilators- Xanthines, Sympathomimetics, and Inhaled Steroids.

Mechanism:

Xanthines: Xanthines target the central nervous system which stimulates the respiration process dilating coronary and pulmonary arteries. They directly affect the smooth muscles of both, the bronchi and blood vessels.
Sympathomimetics: As the name suggests, these agents mimic the effects of the sympathetic nervous system which dilates the bronchi and increases the rate and depth of respiration.
Inhaled Steroids: One of the effective treatments for bronchospasms, inhaled steroids decrease the inflammatory response of the airway increasing the airflow and respiration.

These are just some of the respiratory agents used by us regularly. However, each of it comes with several side-effects and conditional usage guidelines which could stop you from its use.
